The Metro Front Page

Masthead: The masthead of the Metro is done the way it has been done to stand out to people. in this issue the paper does not have its normal background as the news paper is focusing on football but normally it would have a blue background. the combination of the background blue with the white writing and the red ‘free’ sign at the top left corner also shows some patriotism towards England.
‘Puffs’ or ‘blurbs’: The ‘Puff’/’blurb’ of the Metro gives an idea of what they are showing about the football to the audience it helps attract readers as not everyone would like to read the other stories.
Slogan: The slogan of the Metro is ‘the worlds most popular free newspaper’ this is a bold claim but it makes people think the Metro is important.
Lead story: The lead story of The Metro is the ‘BAKER CHIMP TWEET SHAME’ the lead story would include the headline, the subhead, the byline and the stand first. it is important because it usually covers the most important and pressing matters that is happening at the time. The story would be chosen because it is about elite people, the new royal baby, racism and celebrities doing shocking racist things.
Headlines: The headlines for the paper is ‘ BAKER CHIMP TWEET SHAME ‘ the headlines make the lead story pop out to the reader. It is done like this so the reader looks at the story first. They look at the story first because the writing almost covers the page, not allowing any other story to be shown.
Sub-heads: the sub-head gives a brief definition about the main story this is attracts the readers closer to the story because it explains it a little but still leaves gaps of information, this makes the reader get more intrigued.
Article Features
The title of the page is Guilty Pleasures it is written in a neon style it is written like this as it looks glamorous. The background is purple to represent a naughty, luxury feel and the pink background represents a cheeky feel. It has been titled Guilty Pleasures because the meaning of the phrase means something we enjoy that we shouldn’t. This relates to the page because its about information we dont need to know about but we want to.
The lead story has a drop capital attracting the audience to the beginning of the story making the reader want to read more to find out what he fuss is about with the story.
The Metro used the main story of the page to advertise the VOGUE magazine. They did this by adding part of an interview of what the main story is about and then stopped it part way through so the readers want to continue to read the article but will have to buy the magazine. the story interested the media by focusing on a life style on someone people are interested about. The Metro used the types of things people are interested in; money and fashion. This gains the readers attention even more towards the main story. The story focuses on fashion mainly Maya Jama’s fashion as it is bright and attractive. The story also focuses on Stormzy and Maya Jama’s lifestyle and how they lable themselves as “couple goals”. It would also attract readers to the story because its about how they are rich and their lifestyle is very glamorous.
Some stories use play of words or names to interest the readers and attract them to read the story. The metro did this with the story about the Starbucks cup that was left on set during production of an episode of Game of Thrones. They do this by changing the latin phrase “Mea Culpa” which translated to english is “my fault” and turning it into “Mea Cuppa” which means “my cuppa” my cup of tea. This makes the reader want to understand why the newspaper has used this play of words leading them to read more on the story.
The Metro include this page daily because it attracts a younger audience and it is easy to read quickly while your on the train.
Metro Advertising
The metro includes 40%+ in advertising. the advertising is important to the metro because it is where the income comes from. the metro advertises; food, phones, contracts, furniture, banks, films, lotteries, shops, shows, cars, magazines, marathons, betting/gambling, vapes, holidays, technology, businesses, coins, small businesses, metro advertising, rugby and football. These products link to the audience through their interests and needs, the furniture brands would link to the younger readers as they could be in the process of getting a new house. The technology brands would also link to the younger readers as they would want to find out about the newest piece of technology for example a phone and decide if they would want to replace their old phone. with some of the articles and adverts there are subtle links like when the next football match is advertised as matchzone ladbrookes is advertised under it because Ladbrookes make bets on sporting events.
Advertorials:
Advertorials are found in almost every news paper especially the free newspapers as it is another source of income for the news papers as it counts as an advert, just a very subtle advert. Advertorials are adverts that give details such as price, stats, and more about a specific product in the style of an article. Advertorials are good because they draw readers in closer to the product.

The Metro
The metro is a regional newspaper. It is published on a daily. It is a free paper. It is printed in a tabloid layout. It mainly contains soft news but also contains some hard news. It posts a lot of lifestyle content such as gardening, fashion and more. This is because it creates good environment for advertising. You can get a hold of the Metro at the tube train and bus hubs. You can also get it at hospitals. I have read it and i believe it was informative for soft news such as sports but vague when it comes to political.
